Blueberries for Brunch

This cross between French toast and bread pudding is perfect for brunch or for Christmas-morning breakfast. It’s especially suited to easy entertaining because you can make it the day before. For a festive brunch, I like to serve it with nonalcoholic mimosa coolers (see below) and good coffee.

For the French toast

12 slices day-old bread, crusts removed

Two 8-ounce packages cream cheese (the low-fat variety works fine)

Ground cinnamon

1 cup frozen or fresh blueberries

1 pound sausage, cooked and crumbled (I use spicy Jimmy Dean’s) or 1 cup chopped pecans

12 large eggs

2 cups milk

½ cup pure maple syrup

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

For the sauce

½ cup granulated sugar

½ cup packed light-brown sugar

1 tablespoon cornstarch

1 cup water

1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries or other berry (I like to use the frozen triple-berry mix from the grocery store—blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries)

1 tablespoon unsalted butter
